Shafer Vineyards

The Shafer property has been a grape-growing and winemaking site since the 1880s. Today's winery lies in the center of a amphitheater-like structure of dry, rugged hillsides and produces five wines that embody a lush, voluptuous style that results from an ideal, sunny climate and sustainably cultivated vineyards. Shafer's signature wine, Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon, exemplifies the extraordinary richness and suppleness of Stags Leap District fruit.

Shafer Vineyards traces its present incarnation to 1972 when John Shafer left a Chicago publishing career and moved his family to Napa Valley to pursue a new life among grape vines. The vineyard he purchased had last been planted in 1922 and throughout the 1970s he worked to replant and expand the planted acreage. Evolving from grape growers to vintners, the Shafers produced their first Cabernet Sauvignon from their hillside vines in 1978 and began construction on the winery a year later. John's son, Doug Shafer, officially joined the family enterprise as winemaker in 1983 and Elias Fernandez was hired as assistant winemaker in 1984. More than a quarter century later this trio is still at the helm of Shafer Vineyards with Elias as winemaker, Doug as president, and John as Chairman.
